Organised by the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and the Portuguese Engineers Association, the forum brought together national and international experts to discuss advances and future prospects in areas such as ocean engineering, smart ports, offshore energy, aquaculture, deep-sea technologies and maritime safety.
During the event, Pedro Pousão-Ferreira delivered the presentation “Prospects for offshore fish farming in Portugal”, focusing on Portugal’s experience in developing offshore aquaculture systems and the growth opportunities for this sector in the country.
The presentation highlighted the potential of multipurpose offshore platforms, which enable aquaculture to be integrated with other activities carried out in maritime areas. These include offshore wind energy and the use of wave and tidal energy.
The main technical challenges associated with developing structures capable of operating safely and efficiently under demanding ocean conditions were also addressed.
Participation in this forum provided an opportunity to share knowledge and raise awareness of the work being carried out in Portugal in the field of offshore aquaculture. It also contributed to the discussion on innovative and sustainable solutions for the future of the blue economy.
