At S2AQUAcoLAB, we provide specialised diagnostic and applied research services in aquatic animal health. We conduct pathogen challenges, both in vivo and in vitro, to assess disease mitigation strategies in fish, as well as pathological analyses of marine organisms to detect abnormalities and signs of disease.
What can be assessed?
Presence and progression of pathogens, including bacteria, parasites and viruses
Effectiveness of disease mitigation strategies
Signs of disease in marine organisms
Why invest in in vitro and in vivo pathogen challenges?
Assessment of disease mitigation strategies under controlled conditions
Early identification of health risks before they affect real production systems
Cross validation, with in vitro results confirmed under in vivo conditions
A strong scientific basis for safer animal health management decisions
Why invest in regular pathological analysis of marine organisms?
Early detection — timely identification of abnormalities and signs of disease
Accurate diagnosis — direct observation of lesions and tissue alterations, such as those affecting the gills
Loss prevention — intervention before diseases worsen
Support for health management — essential information for informed decision making
These services support aquaculture producers in addressing health-related challenges and implementing good practices for the health, welfare and safety of farmed organisms. They also help prevent production losses, preserve market value and ensure the safety and quality of aquaculture products.
